Social media management

Building brand awareness, increasing sales and connecting with your customers

Whether you need a complete overhaul of your existing social media practices or simply to step your efforts up a gear or two, there are two areas you need to tackle now more than ever: social media and content marketing. With more than 700 social media platforms to choose from – and counting – it’s easy to be overwhelmed by the idea of social media marketing.

Let’s look at some of the most obvious benefits:

It increases confidence in your brand or service and improves brand loyalty (figures from US research outfit The Social Habit suggest 53 percent of people who follow brands in social media are more loyal to those brands than their competitors).

It’s both time and cost effective (internet marketing company Hubspot claims just six hours of engagement with social media each week helps to increase website traffic, while at the same reducing marketing expenses).

By monitoring user comments it puts you in direct communication with your customers and helps you to discover their likes and how they behave.

Last but not least, having a strong social media presence can help improve your search engine rankings.

So if you’re not using social media as a marketing strategy, what’s your excuse?

You don’t have the time?

You don’t have the inspiration?

You don’t have the know-how?

You can’t spare an employee to manage a social media marketing project?

The good news is there’s a solution for all these obstacles.

Content marketing

It’s essential to get to grips with content marketing too. There are many types of content marketing, including e-newsletters, infographics, videos, webinars, podcasts and white papers. But the best – and arguably easiest – place to start is with a blog. Like social media marketing, regular business blogging increases brand awareness. It also helps potential customers or clients discover your website in the major search engines. Additionally, if you have a well-written, well-researched blog, it can help establish your business as an expert in its field.

Duplicate content – why not to use

If so, you may have considered using duplicate content – that is, content that appears on one or more other websites. While whether or not search engines penalise websites for having duplicate content is still very much a subject of debate, one thing we do know: having duplicate content on your website is very unlikely to improve your search engine performance. Google will disregard copy content by displaying within the search results this message: “In order to show you the most relevant results, we have omitted some entries very similar to the results already displayed…” In other words, if you’re using duplicate content, your website may not show up in a relevant search at all.

Educate inform and entertain with your content

To get the most benefits from a business blog, you need original content that relates specifically to your business, service or product that’s written firmly with your customers or clients in mind.

A well-written blog should be accessible, avoiding corporate or any other kind of jargon. It shouldn’t all be about the hard sell either. Instead, it should add value to your customers’ (or potential customers’) experience by educating, informing and entertaining.

Combine these two strategies and you have a marketing dream team. Blogging – or content marketing – and social media marketing work synergistically. Think of it like this: social media is an essential tool to distribute your original content to the right target audience. And without content, you don’t have anything original to share on social media.

To make your blog work hard for you, you should share it regularly across a range of social networks. For instance, using multiple straplines (or headlines) means you can promote the same content to different audiences, extending its reach each time. See our guidelines on which social media networks are right for your business.

Using good-quality photography or other visual content is also highly advisable, since experts believe blogs that include images receive significantly more views than text-only pages.
